so I was a little concerned when I read ebert's rating of 2 and a half stars. after seeing it for myself, I'll have to say, he was being generous. If you thought that the James Bond reboot was handled poorly, man, do I have bad news for you. From actions scenes filmed in no less then 50 cuts per 5 minute scene, to a bridge that has more lense flares then a poorly coded myspace page, the new star trek movie will wow you with it's lack of attention to <i>purely scientific</i> details, or the inability of the plot to engage you at any time. The main bad guy apparently was lost in space for 25 years, but pshh, didn't age a day. He was going to go kill Spock at one point, but then just left him on an ice planet (where spock just slept in an ice cave, instead of the starfleet base a short walk away), and then seemed to forget about 'old' spock and decided to rush after 'young' spock, who was upset that his mother had been vaporized due to a 2 foot drop.

Tiki's rating: one star, and that's only because there was a green girl in her underwear, and that's it. This is not a good movie, and replaces Nemesis on my 'worst star trek movie ever' list.

I wouldn't exactly call that spoilerish.

Maybe I get to watch it tomorrow.
Maybe I get to go to Savannah and entertain my son and his girlfriend tomorrow instead.
I have kids birthdays Sunday (they turn 19, not exactly kids but...)

As a side note, it appears you need to engage the <i>italics</i> tag, or else use the <em> tag instead. :)

(Wow, what I had to go through to get that to display properly!)

The meek shall inherit the Earth. The rest of us are getting the hell off this rock!

Spoilers here for those who haven't seen the movie!

Since my wife didn't get my ass out of bed and claimed not to have read my email about going to Savannah (She did get it, she just didn't go far enough to read the third sentence of a three sentence email...), we watched it last night.

I enjoyed it. The shooting style was a bit much with lens flares everywhere.

Where in the hell was Kirk's brother? Or was it a younger brother? I thought he was older, but who knows.

And according to Kirk, he was born in Iowa, NOT in space!

The 25 year gap was a bit much, but then, Romulans and Vulcans do age slower than humans.

The red matter was ... interesting. It was a plot contrivance, I mean, why was Spock carrying around so much of it, when he he obviously didn't need it all for his mission? Was that the real reason why Nero was waiting for Spock, just to get his hands on the red matter?

And I guess Kirk is now really in the record books. He made Captain in record time previously by getting there in his early 30's. Now to make it by 25?

I really liked when the old Spock met the new Spock. The old Spock already knew that Kirk was going to have to spill his guts eventually. And Spock learning that he would learn how to lie eventually.

And where in the hell was Captain April! He was the first captain of the Enterprise!

I would have liked a better resemblance to the old Enterprise.

My wife is wondering how long before the alternate Trek universe has it's own series of books.

Star Trek loves the alternate/parallel/opposite universes and uses them freely to avoid plot contradictions. It's a long running series ad contradictions are nearly impossible to avoid. TNG used it so often that it became a regular plot contrivance. I usually enjoy them; it allows the characters to 'step out' for a bit.

I don't always accidentally, but when I do, I accidentally the whole thing.

man, you know what I just realized?

The only Star Trek stuff that's 'cannon' now is this new Star Trek movie...and Star Trek: Enterprise.

Yeah. So that just about sums up my feelings of the movie.

    Star Trek : Enterprise.
